Story
A couple of years ago I gave my Dad a map of The Coleridge way a 51 mile walk from Lynmouth to Nether Stowey. When I gave the map to him it was given with the challenge of doing the walk with him in 24 hours.
At the end of a very strange school year for all students we decided to mark the start of the official school holiday by joining up with 2 friends to walk this route in aid of UNICEF. I chose this charity because not only does it do such amazing work world wide but it gives ideas about what every donation can achieve.
Here are some of the ideas that make me determined to complete this challenge.
- £7 is enough for life saving salts for 20 children
- £14 would buy polio vaccinations for 100 children
- £18 pays for mosquito nets for 9 families
- £30 would be enough for a baby to be born in a developing country safely
- £55 is enough to vaccinate 500 children against Tetanus
- £160 would help 40 students learn with a school in a box
- £1472 funds a midwife and equipment for 50 births.
I am a child who sees myself as very lucky, born in a place with beautiful, safe surroundings. I want to do this walk in this place to help children far worse off, so they have a better chance in their futures whether that is through education, healthcare or the right to a safe birth. That is why I have chosen UNICEF – they make a difference where it is needed both in the UK and globally.
